Gracie Barra is one of the largest and most traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Organizations in the world with over 200 black belts and more than 300 schools or affiliates worldwide. It is headed by Carlos Gracie, Jr., son of Carlos Gracie, the first Gracie to ever learn Jiu-Jitsu from Japanese emigrant to Brazil Otávio Mitsuyo Maeda. The largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial art school in the world is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gracie Barra schools, Instructors, and competitors are present not only in the United States or Brazil, but also in South and Central Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Founded in 1986, Gracie Barra grew to become renowned in the Martial Arts world. Gracie Barra is not only famous in teaching self defense system on grappling and ground fighting, but recognized for its unyielding commitment to excellence on teaching methods, cutting-edge programs, and focus on a balanced life style. Carlos Gracie Jr. is the founder and head instructor of the Gracie Barra Academy, the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in the world, located in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gracie Barra's black belts include numerous world class instructors and athletes.
Associated with the school is the Gracie Barra Combat Team, a stable of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters who compete in mixed martial arts matches. Associated with Gracie Barra Academy, the team is most famous for its fighters Renzo Gracie, Roger Gracie, Lucio Rodrigues, Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling 99 kg champion Marcio Cruz.
